A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A RESPIRATORY THERAPIST
Job Summary:
The Respiratory Therapist (RT) is responsible for assessing, treating, and managing patients with respiratory disorders. They provide direct patient care, administer treatments, and collaborate with healthcare teams to develop effective care plans.
Key Responsibilities:
Patient Care & Assessment:
Evaluate patients with breathing or cardiopulmonary disorders.
Conduct diagnostic tests, such as pulmonary function tests and arterial blood gas analysis.
Monitor and record patients’ responses to treatments.
Therapeutic Interventions:
Administer oxygen therapy, aerosol medications, and chest physiotherapy.
Manage ventilators and artificial airway devices for patients requiring mechanical ventilation.
Provide emergency respiratory care, including CPR and airway management.
Collaboration & Education:
Work with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement care plans.
Educate patients and families on respiratory conditions, treatment plans, and proper use of inhalers, oxygen therapy, and CPAP/BiPAP devices.
Equipment & Compliance:
Ensure proper use, cleaning, and maintenance of respiratory therapy equipment.
Follow safety guidelines, infection control protocols, and hospital policies.
Maintain accurate records and documentation of treatments and patient progress.
Qualifications & Requirements:
Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Therapy.
Licensure & Certification:
Must be licensed as a Respiratory Therapist in the applicable state.
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
BLS and ACLS certifications (as required by the facility).
Experience: Prior clinical experience
Skills: Strong communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
Work Environment:
Long-term care facilities, rehabilitation centers, or home health settings.
Requires standing, lifting, and assisting patients with mobility.
May involve working weekends, holidays, or being on call for emergencies.
